As someone who has now tried 4 times to move from quickbooks desktop to quickbooks online, i can tell you the market is ready for an alternative in smb accounting.
The key however to break into the monopolistic market for smb accounting, is through an api and looking at accounting very differently.
Accounting software has moved from providing a simple general ledger and financial statements to become bloated - this is legacy from the 90s when the accounting software was the single source of truth.
However, in today's world where most (if not all) financial transactions originate in other systems, we don't need the accounting package to do anything but g/l and reporting.
Zoho Books could have a simple restful api that supports journal entries up and running in no time, and it would allow us early adopters to create connections to all the other systems (crm / credit cards / paypal / payroll / etc.). we are a group who no longer wants to pay for a bookkeeper to use an accounting system - we want 100% automated transaction recording. for this reason, your target market shouldn't be accountants (most of whom love the inefficiencies of quickbooks). it should be cloud developers who know how badly their clients don't want *any* ui in their accounting system.
My advice - stop building features that will not compete with qb, and build an api - then create zoho reports connectors, and everyone is in nirvana with the end of accounting as we knew it.
We certainly agree on your valuable inputs. The good news is we are working on providing the rest API's for Zoho Books. This will be available in due course of time and we'd be glad to update this space as we make progress.
I am all for an API to Zoho Books. I am just about to release a program for home health care agencies and one of the things that will be needed is a link to an accounting program. Since my product is cloud based it would be great to work with an accounting program that is also cloud based. I have a client that has already purchased our program and a few on the sidelines about to jump in and they all would like to give up on their quickbooks. I thing that Zoho books would be perfect for them.
It would definitely be a great value add for many of our current users and potential users if we have the APIs for Zoho Books made available. Like mentioned earlier, we are working on a REST style of APIs for Zoho Books and will have it available as early as possible. We will keep you updated on any news in this regard.
We thank you for your patience and understanding in this regard.
We are continuously working on the APIs for Zoho Books and want to make it available as early as possible. However, we are not in a position to commit a timeline for this at this point in time. We will certainly keep you posted on any news in this regard.
We are happy to inform that Zoho Books API is ready
and is available exclusively for you now. Get the early access to
the Zoho Books APIs. Here's the link for the API documentation : https://www.zoho.com/books/api/v3/
